Your own pattern

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” - Dolly Parton

I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.

The other week, I shared the basic idea behind maintaining mindshare. In my humble opinion, this is the most important aspect of building a strong network. If you think the solution is just to swap business cards, I wish you luck.

I’ve spoken at length about the different methods to maintain relationships. Dinners. Gifting. Handwritten notes. As long as you stay centered on the right people, and delivering the right feeling.

That gives you both a lot of freedom - and the burden - to figure out what works for the relationships that you want to cultivate.

Most importantly, it takes finding what works for you.

I’ve witnessed people take a variety of different approaches -

The realtor who makes a point of sending out dozens of quick text messages a week to people - purely as they come to mind.

The founder who you might not hear from for months, save for getting invited for a half day hike.

The investor who keeps her calendar full of quarterly 30 minute catch-up Zooms.

The coach who sends out a handwritten card every day.

The author who, for every article they read, sends it to a handful of people that would benefit from it.

The thing for you to think about today - what type of person are you? What brings you the most energy?

One of our main missions in life is to figure out who we are, and what works for us - not getting goaded into doing what others are doing.

Three questions for you to think about today:

  • Are you better off blocking off time in your calendar every day, or is it effortless for you to reach out to people as they come to mind?

  • Do you enjoy the short brief exchanges, or would you rather go deeper, infrequently?

  • Are you at your highest connective energy in a coffee meeting? Staring at a webcam? Seated at a dinner table? Playing pickleball (or whatever fad sport we’re supposed to be into at the moment)?

Much love,
