Do we really have to talk about gratitude? Sure do.
Think gratitude is just for Thanksgiving? Discover how it can be a game-changer in your professional network, all year round.
I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.
With Thanksgiving around the corner in the US, let's talk about gratitude. Yes, it might seem cliché, but hear me out. Gratitude isn't just for turkey dinners and family gatherings; it's a powerful tool for reigniting and strengthening your relationships year-round.
The Power of a Thankful Recall
Gratitude can breathe new life into your connections. Remembering and acknowledging a good deed, no matter how long ago, not only brings back positive memories but also shows that you value and appreciate the actions of others. It’s not strange at all - in fact, it's a heartfelt nod to the past that can spark a renewed connection in the present.
The Ripple Effect of Appreciation
When you express specific gratitude to someone, it does more than just make them (and us) feel good. It reminds them of what you value, which might not be apparent for them. This act of recognition can also inspire reciprocity, opening doors to new interactions and opportunities.
Your Action Plan
Be Specific: When reaching out to express gratitude, be specific about why you appreciate someone. It could be for their support during a tough project, their insightful advice, or even a small act of kindness that stayed with you.
Reach Out to the Past: Think of someone who positively impacted your life, even if it was years ago. In my coaching community, I’ve been known to invite everyone to think of someone who made an introduction to them at least a year ago, and reach out with something like “I was just reviewing my records and remembered you introduced me to XXXX. Thank you!” You'll be surprised how often this rekindles a relationship and leads to meaningful conversations.
Gratitude isn't just for Thanksgiving; it's a year-round strategy for deepening your relationships and showing that you genuinely care. Never underestimate the impact of a simple 'thank you.' It's one of the most powerful tools in your relationship-building toolkit.
