The question that transforms networking

What if one question could change the way you connect with people? Let's explore tactical empathy.

I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you. BTW - have you signed up for my new course? It’s free for you.

In the realm of building deeper relationships, one principle stands out: tactical empathy. It's about understanding and connecting with others on a deeper level, and one of the most effective ways to do this is by asking the right questions. That’s my β€œfocus” for the year.

The Power of a Good Question

A question I've been encouraging my clients to use recently is, "What is exciting you the most right now?" This simple inquiry opens a window into what's currently occupying someone's thoughts and energy, be it a job hunt, a big move, a new hobby, or a book that's captured their imagination.

Why This Question Works

  1. It Goes Beyond Surface-Level: This question cuts through small talk and invites someone to share what truly matters to them at this moment.

  2. Opportunity for Support: Understanding what excites someone gives you a chance to offer help or resources, deepening the connection.

  3. Encourages Sharing: Often, people are looking for someone to share their passions and plans with. Your question can be the invitation they need.

  4. Builds Trust: By showing genuine interest in what matters to them, you foster a sense of trust and likability.

Tactical Empathy in Action

When you ask this question, listen actively. Show genuine interest in their response, and if there's a way you can contribute to their excitement or journey, offer it. Sometimes, just being a sounding board for someone's ideas and dreams can significantly strengthen your relationship.

In today's world, where genuine connections are more valuable than ever, mastering the art of tactical empathy can set you apart. It's not just about networking; it's about building meaningful, trust-based relationships.

To deeper connections and the power of the right questions,

P.S. Remember, the most meaningful connections are built on understanding and empathy. Keep asking the right questions, and watch your relationships grow stronger and deeper.
