Less tools, more systems
Got all the right tools but still struggling? Here's the missing link you've been searching for.
I write weekly on insights and tactics around building an incredible network of clients, collaborators, and community.
Announcement: If cultivating connections are important to you, I am hosting a free workshop on The Five Myths Sabotaging Your Sphere Engagement, as a lead-in to my new Be More Relatable program.
Growing up, whenever I went into the basement of a friends house, I would often come across a very, very expensive clothes rack.
You know what I mean, because there’s a good chance you have one yourself. That high tech treadmill (or nowadays, spin bike) whose handlebars have been converted into another closet? You're not alone.
The problem isn't the tool; it's the lack of a system. Let's dive into why this distinction is the game-changer you've been missing. It took me years, and millions in lost revenue, before we figured this out.
When we were marketing and selling our CRM, people flocked to the platform thinking it was the panacea for their networking woes. But many struggled. There would be a flurry of activity to set it up, then they’d never sign in again. We knew it would be perfect for someone, then they would churn. Why? Because they - and we - mistook the tool for the solution. A tool is just a piece of the puzzle; it's not the complete picture.
Tool vs. System: The Crucial Difference
A tool is a singular entity designed to perform specific tasks. A system, however, is a holistic approach that combines strategy, tactics, and tools. A tool can help you execute a task, but a system helps you understand why you're doing that task, how to do it effectively, and what tools can aid you.
The more I understood, this, the more I started leaning more into understanding and communicating the strategy, which birthed a book. Now, beyond offering a tool, I spend most of my time on the habits and systems, because I realize that’s where people get stuck.
How can you learn from my years of struggle?
Your Action Plan
If you're struggling despite having all the 'right' tools, it's time to step back and think systemically. Ask yourself:
Strategy: What are my long-term goals? (e.g. Generate more repeat business)
Tactics: What steps do I need to take to achieve these goals? (e.g. Identify who is likely to need additional help, engage with them monthly)
Tools: What can help me execute these steps efficiently? (e.g. a CRM with a prioritized list of my best past clients)
Once you align these elements, your tools will transform from expensive paperweights into powerful assets.

P.S. Remember, a tool is only as effective as the system it's a part of. Don't just collect tools; build systems.
