Why you need both Strategic vs Random in your outreach
I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.
Ever notice how your Spotify playlist feels infinitely better when you mix your carefully curated favorites with the occasional "just give me your random suggestions"?
I'm about to tell you something that might sound just as contradictory.
You should be incredibly strategic about who you reach out to. And you should also sometimes just wing it completely.
Let me explain.
Your database exists to help you be strategic. After all, you'd much rather reconnect with that amazing past client than the random person who cold emailed you last week asking to "pick your brain," right? That's why we organize, tag, and prioritize our relationships (if you need help with that, grab the class). I call that “engineered serendipity.”
laser focused strategic outreach
But here's the thing - some of the most meaningful reconnections I've seen have come from pure randomness. Scrolling back through old text messages, letting your eyes land on someone's name, and sending a quick "Hey, you came to mind today" message. Pure chaos... and sometimes pure magic.
Taking Action:
Set up regular time blocks to systematically reach out to your high-priority contacts (your "A's" and "B's")
AFTERWARDS, scroll randomly through your phone or CRM and reach out to whoever catches your eye. Don't overthink it.
The only rule? Make it genuine. Whether strategic or random, your outreach should come from a place of authentic interest in reconnecting.
In our world of ephemeral connections and digital drive-bys, showing you still care - whether through careful planning or serendipitous reaching out - is what builds lasting relationships.
Until next week, Zvi
