How to hit a home run

My three steps to take action

I write weekly on tactics and insights on cultivating authentic relationships that matter to your business, career, and life.

“How to hit home runs: I swing as hard as I can, and I try to swing right through the ball... The harder you grip the bat, the more you can swing it through the ball, and the farther the ball will go. I swing big, with everything I've got.” - Babe Ruth

All too often when you’re reaching out to someone, we’re so obsessed with what might happen after the message is sent.

I constantly witness people frozen in the fear of reaching out. What if I’m too salesy? I hear that one at least three times a week. What if they don’t respond? What if, what if, what if. I do the same. Better not talk to them at all than face what might happen if.

Why?

We have no control over that. Just like Babe has limited control over a hit being a home run, all we can focus on is what we do.

Try this

I’ve seen these three work - the third is incredibly effective for me when I’m at my worst:

  • Write the message first, then add in the contact information. Silly, but yes, it works.

  • Say out loud to yourself - “I don’t care what happens, I’m just going to write what I to share”

  • Scheduling the message to get sent at a later time separates the action from the result more than you’d expect - even if it’s just five minutes from now.

Have an excellent week - go reach out to that person you’ve been hesitant to message - and then get a taco.

“What do I do with my hands?” wasn’t a problem for me.
