It’s never too late
Your network's potential doesn't expire. Discover the power of reigniting old relationships today.
I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.
I hear this all the time. “It’s been so long, they’re going to wonder why I’m reaching out.”
One of the most common hurdles in networking is the belief that too much time has passed to rekindle a connection. And if you do, they’re going to think you have an agenda. But here's a truth bomb: it's never too late. The notion that a relationship is dead because you haven't been in touch is a myth we need to bust right now.
The Myth of 'Too Late'
We often convince ourselves that if we haven't spoken to someone in a long time, reaching out would be awkward or unwelcome. This mindset can cause us to miss out on valuable opportunities to reconnect. Remember, relationships aren't perishable goods; they don't have an expiration date.
And the fear of being seen as having an ulterior motive? There’s a simple antidote: don’t have one. I believe in building generative relationships, where we intentionally nurture relationships with people we know, like, and trust. So you’re reconnecting just because you truly care about them, not because of the dollar sign floating over their head.
A Simple Action with Big Impact
Here’s a fun exercise I do in my weekly program: dive into your CRM and sort your contacts to show those you've contacted the least recently. Find someone you genuinely want to reconnect with.
Then, take a simple but powerful step: send them a message saying, "Hey! Long time no talk. Just thought of you."
That's it. No need for lengthy explanations or apologies for the silence. A straightforward, sincere message can reignite a conversation and bring a dormant relationship back to life.
The Power of Reconnection
You'd be surprised how often a simple message like this is met with warmth and enthusiasm. People understand that life gets busy, and they often appreciate the effort to reach out. Plus, reigniting an old connection can lead to new opportunities, insights, and collaborations that you might not have anticipated.
So, let go of the fear that it's been too long. Reach out, rekindle, and watch as your network grows stronger with each revived connection.
