Brutal honesty

I write weekly on tactics and insights on cultivating authentic relationships that matter to your business, career, and life.

The cover letter you’ve been tweaking is what’ll ensure you get invited to an interview.

This book proposal you’re sweating over is what’ll decide whether or not your magnum opus gets published.

The business idea that takes up so much time in the shower that you forgot to use conditioner, AGAIN - could be your focus for the next 8-10 years.

Wouldn’t you want to double check it’s not hot garbage?

Great - then the best gift we can give to the people we care about is brutal, honest feedback.

“The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.”

– Norman Vincent Peale

I know it may strike us as counter intuitive. We want to root for them, be their biggest fan. Why would we rain on their parade?

Like the rest of us mere mortals, they only have so much time on earth. Only so many shots on goal.

Just as we want to ensure we are putting our best foot forward, we owe it to them.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go further, go together.

Taking Action

The next time you’re asking for feedback, open up with vulnerability:

“I would really appreciate your honest feedback - even if you totally hate it, I would not take it personally.”

And the next time someone asks you what you think, preface it with something like:

“I really care about you, and want to help you and this project be successful. So here’s my completely raw thoughts - and of course, this is just my opinion:”

BTW - what do you think of these emails? See below 🙂

Until next week,

If you found this valuable, have you snagged my course on cultivating your network?

“What do I do with my hands?” wasn’t a problem for me.

I’ve spent the past 12 years helping people like you grow their businesses and careers by cultivating the relationships that matter. I took everything I’ve learned and practiced and put it in a professionally produced online course.
